Position: Senior Geotechnical Engineer
Location: Fargo, ND and Ramsey, MN (2 positions)
Compensation: Salary DOQ, Full Benefits
Reports to: Regional Manager
Company Description:
Northern Technologies, Inc., established in 1996, practices in the areas of Geotechnical & Materials Engineering, Materials Testing, Environmental and Forensics from three offices (Fargo, ND, Grand Forks, ND and Ramsey, MN). NTI employs 40 engineers, technicians and support staff serving a variety of clients including architectural and engineering firms, developers, contractors, facility mangers and all levels of government. We remained stable during the economic downturn and are poised to expand during the coming recovery. To address this growth we have an opening for a Senior Geotechnical Engineer in both Fargo and Ramsey. These positions report directly to the Regional Manager and offer, for the successful candidate, the potential for management/ownership.
The successful candidate for the Senior Geotechnical Engineer position will have the following qualifications, skills and experience.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering or a related field
- 15+ years progressive geotechnical engineering experience with a diverse range of projects in a consulting environment (A combination of a Master’s degree and fewer years of experience may be acceptable)
- Registration as a P.E. in Minnesota or North Dakota, or the ability to become licensed within 4 months
Required Skills:
- In-depth knowledge of the principals and standards of geotechnical engineering, engineering geology, soil and rock mechanics, groundwater hydrology, and foundation design
- Working knowledge and experience in the use of analytical models for geotechnical engineering
- Established ability to lead and manage multiple projects
- Demonstrated project management skills including definition of scope of work, establishment of budgets and schedules, ability to define and articulate project objectives and devise effective solutions, control of project costs and schedule, timely billing and collection of payments, risk management, and optimizing the contribution of team members
- Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communications skills
- Excellent leadership, mentoring and problem resolution skills
- Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain strong client relationships (previous experience marketing technical services is desirable)
Job duties:
- Simultaneously manage multiple projects including the supervision, scheduling, training and mentoring of lower level engineers and technicians. Ensure that team members are assigned appropriate roles for which they are qualified, yet challenged to grow professionally, all the while maintaining a positive attitude and high morale
- Apply technical knowledge and methods to formulate solutions and approaches to complex problems in the area of geotechnical engineering, including field exploration methods and procedures, planning studies, preparation of reports and geotechnical recommendations, design of deep and shallow foundation systems for all types of structures, retaining wall systems, slope stability analyses, forensic evaluations and engineering services during construction
- Establish and maintain positive client relationships through on-going communication and effective response to client needs, which will indirectly develop business backlog. Direct marketing is not a major responsibility for this position but successful candidate will be expected to work with Regional Managers to procure work
- Develop, review and sign proposals and reports, client contracts and sub-contracts in accordance with company policies
- Prepare monthly project billing
- Serve as internal technical expert and resource
- Professionally represent the company when working with co-workers, clients, contractors, other technical professionals, regulatory agencies and the public
- Perform related duties as assigned
